GMPC、ISO 14644-1

In the construction of coating purification workshops, many enterprises allocate budgets and attention to visible materials such as color steel plates and stainless steel plates, while neglecting the sealant for wall gaps. In fact, sealant is the "invisible champion" that determines workshop cleanliness and safety. A panel worth several hundred yuan may cause the entire workshop to fail cleanliness standards due to the failure of sealant costing only a few yuan. Today, we will explain from engineering principles and actual cases why sealant is more important than panels.

I. Special Environment of Coating Workshops: Why Gaps Must Be "Zero Tolerance"

Coating workshops are fundamentally different from ordinary industrial plants. They are filled with organic solvent volatiles—VOCs molecules such as toluene, butanone, and ethyl acetate have diameters of only 0.4-0.7 nanometers, smaller than ordinary air molecules, capable of penetrating tiny gaps invisible to the naked eye. Meanwhile, coating processes require extremely high cleanliness standards. Under ISO 5-6 level standards, particles larger than 0.5 microns must not exceed 3,520 per cubic meter; any gap may become a contamination channel.

More critically is the safety risk. After solvent vapors mix with air, the lower explosion limit is only 1.2%-2%. Once leakage and accumulation occur, electrostatic sparks can trigger disasters. If wall gaps are not properly sealed, VOCs will permeate from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas, forming "invisible gas pockets" in ceiling interlayers and wall cavities—ticking time bombs.

II. Core Functions of Sealant: Three Defense Lines

First Defense Line: Airtight Barrier

Gaps between color steel plates and stainless steel plates, even if appearing tight to the naked eye, still have irregular microscopic clearances. High-quality sealant can fill these micron-level gaps, forming a continuous airtight layer. Silicone sealant typically has a Shore hardness between 20-40, providing sufficient elasticity to accommodate panel thermal expansion and contraction while maintaining long-term airtightness. In contrast, inferior sealants or simple caulking processes may shrink and crack within three months, completely losing airtightness.

Second Defense Line: Chemical Resistance

Solvent vapors in coating workshops have strong permeability and corrosiveness. Ordinary sealants will swell, soften, and lose adhesion under long-term VOCs exposure. Specialized cleanroom sealants adopt low-VOCs formulations, releasing no volatile substances themselves, while resisting benzene and ketone solvent erosion, with service lives reaching over 10 years. This means sealant must not only "block effectively" but also "endure chemically."

Third Defense Line: Structural Buffering

Cleanrooms operate year-round; panels undergo thermal expansion and contraction due to temperature changes, with joints bearing repeated stress. Sealant's elastic modulus is typically between 0.3-1.0 MPa, effectively absorbing such displacement and preventing panel deformation or rivet loosening. Without sealant's buffering function, panel joints may develop visible cracks within one year, causing cleanliness collapse.

III. Why Sealant Is More Important Than Panels: Cost and Risk Leverage Effect

From unit price perspective, silicone sealant seems "insignificant" compared to color steel plates. But from system functionality perspective, sealant is the critical node determining success or failure.

Failure Mode Analysis

A damaged panel can be locally replaced with limited impact scope. But once sealant fails, gaps become contamination channels—VOCs permeation, particle intrusion, pressure imbalance issues chain-react and explode. More insidiously, sealant failure often starts internally; the surface appears intact while actual sealing function is already lost. By the time of discovery, multiple contaminated batches may have already been completed.

Total Life Cycle Cost

High-quality sealant construction costs account for only 3-5% of total enclosure structure costs, but can extend the entire purification system's service life by over 30%. For a thousand-square-meter workshop, sealant investment is about 30,000-50,000 yuan, but avoiding batch scrapping, customer complaints, and reconstruction due to cleanliness non-compliance creates potential value exceeding one million yuan.

Compliance and Certification

GMPC, ISO 14644-1, and other standards have clear requirements for cleanroom airtightness. During audits, sealant selection, construction records, and inspection reports are all mandatory check items. Using non-specialized sealants or non-compliant construction may lead to certification failure and loss of high-end customer access qualifications.

IV. Sealant Selection and Construction Key Points

Material Selection

Priority should be given to neutral-cure silicone sealants, avoiding acetic acid types that release acetic acid corroding metal panels. For areas with high solvent concentrations, chemically corrosion-resistant products should be selected, passing toluene and butanone immersion tests. Meanwhile, sealants themselves should pass low-VOCs certification, not becoming new contamination sources.

Construction Key Points

Substrate surfaces must be clean and dry, free of oil, dust, and oxide layers. Joint width should be controlled at 6-12 millimeters, with depth being 0.5-0.7 times the width, ensuring full filling. Use specialized caulking guns, maintaining 45-degree angles with uniform speed movement, avoiding bubbles and discontinuities. Avoid disturbance during curing; at room temperature, surface dryness is achieved in 24 hours, with full curing in 7 days.

Quality Inspection

Visual inspection should confirm continuous, uniform joints without bubbles, cracks, or missing sealant. Vacuum leak detection or helium mass spectrometry leak detection should verify airtightness meets design standards. Establish construction archives recording sealant type, batch, construction personnel, and inspection results for traceability and maintenance.

V. Choose Andisanti to Make Gaps "Reliable Boundaries"
